This is a fine, fine city we live in...
"Check out the irony in this: a foreigner, wearing a t-shirt that says, "Let freedom ring across our nation" with a picture of the Liberty Bell, holding a bootleg copy of Rush Hour 3, on the subway. Whadda country! What a fine city we live in!" - girlygirl72Indeed, it is...Only in America, specifically New York City, can one find hundreds of thousands of non-citizens celebrating our Constitutional freedoms of self-expression, while simultaneously breaking the laws under which they so desperately want to live.

Now I'm a loyal reader...I'm honored!
I think the law breaking comment is an extreme stretch. Sure, the media over plays the crimialized drug driven homicidal if not terrorist-siding immigrant image. As and African American, I am even more aware of the hateful purpose of the media driven frenzy. As an 80's youth, I was inundated with War on Drugs and War on Welfare campaigns which translated very simply into a war on Black folks with the nightly news talking about Black murders, Black rapist, Black monsters, and crack babies with vague sketches and fuzzy photos that looked like me and everyone I know. The foundations of this America we all seem to hold so dear is one of immigration, slavery, disenfranchisement and folks, citizens and non-citizens alike, campaigning for fair labor laws and reasonable pathways to economic, academic and political success. Denied a fair chance to immigrate and survive, well hell, you break the law to survive and for your children to survive. I understand and respect that sentiment. The overwhelming majority of the "immigrant problem," are hard working upstanding folks who are just asking one thing from us- To respect and uphold our own f-ing constitution and due process laws. Don't buy into the separatist politic that only polarizes and miss this opportunity for community building and cultural evolution.
