Good Riddance, Part Deux: Alberto Gonzales to Resign

Published reports state that U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales is set to resign.Gonzales' decision was first reported by the New York Times on its Web site. The Bush administration's legal lapdog is set to cash in his chips, officially, later today. According to the New York Times, he made clear his intentions to step down on Friday.

Finally, Gonzales is getting out of the line of fire -- a sad state of affairs for him, because it was a situation of his own making. Any man willing to shred The Constitution more than arch-conservative John Ashcroft, deserves no sympathy. And considering Gonzales had a little problem telling the truth to Congress didn't help matters either.

Now, we all understand that the Congress has liars, cheats, and thieves, but lying to Congress is a whole 'nother thing! Seriously, his testimony on issues like the federal wiretap program and firings of several Assistant Attorney's General was like watching a bad Saturday Night Live skit. The testimony on each sordid affair required follow-up explanations. Worse, he was contradicted by documents from his own office, and/or the statements of other federal officials. At the hearings on the U.S. attorney firings, Gonzales frequently said he could not remember details about key events. At one point he said "I don't recall" more than 30 times.

And this is the chief law enforcement officer for the United States?! Sad. Gonzales was the Barney Fife of the Federal Government. But this ain't Mayberry and life in these United States isn't a comedy -- well, yeah actually at times, it is kinda.

Regardless, two down, two -- Bush and Cheney -- to go.
