November 2007 Archives

After a short, tryptophan- and carbohydrate-induced coma, we return to musical excursions in time with the Friday Musical Flashback. Today's edition features one of the most loved (and successful) examples of the crossover-driven 80's songs from Britain.

Sean Taylor Was A "Regular" Black Man

I guess I look at Taylor and see a regular black guy, with a not-so-regular job, who was victimized over what, I'm sure, will be some imagined, or completely insignificant slight of manhood directed towards the guilty party or someone associated with them

Ten Steps to Tyranny

As Americans turn towards the rampant consumerism of the holiday season, and look on quite leisurely to Dancing with The Stars, Britney Spear's latest meltdown or the foolish antics of Paris Hilton, the foundations of democracy are being fatally corroded.

Back to Work: Is Ron Paul The Truth?

Can Ron Paul be ignored? Sure, but at every other candidate's peril.

It's Really Bad...

...when your name becomes a verb that has a distinctly negative connotation.
Undoubtedly, you've hummed, sang, or tapped out the famous notes of this classic song. Now, you can enjoy it again at your desk, or wherever you're reading this post. Today's Friday Flashback, the excellent Strawberry Letter 23.

Three Things Of Note Today

Just quick musings on three things of note from today's news.

Oil, OPEC, and You

With oil hovering at $100 a barrel, all one needs to do is look at the cost of a gallon of gas at your local filling station to see the day-to-day effects.
Inside Out" was a huge club hit, going to number 12 on the Billboard R&B charts in the summer of 1982. While their U.S. hits soon dried up, Odyssey had a few more hits in the U.K. before the group fell apart. But surely, "Inside Out" is memorable as one of the classic cuts of the '80s.

Holiday Shill Starting Already

Is anyone else besides me disturbed by the fact that Christmas advertisements are already on the air?

Piling On Hillary

I'd say to Hills, her supporters, and the rest of her camp: Man, er, Woman Up. Stop crying wolf, because all this right now, is nothing. Wait until she wins the nomination. There really will be piling on then.
Does anyone besides me think that GWB is giving Condi Rice a piece of his love she can have? I think we should check the presidential iPod -- he does have one -- and see what's in his playlist.
Sophisticated Hillbillies and Drugs. Looks like scandal just can't seem to stay away from the wealthy and famous in the GOP. One of presidential candidate Fred Thompson's advisers is a convicted drug dealer.
After hearing As hundreds of times, like a good glass of well-aged scotch, it never disappoints. And really, isn't that the definition of a classic? Plus, you've got to love the simple, succinct, and subtle one-word title.

Urban Terrorists?

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)
Let's face it, most people of color live have lived with urban terrorism for years. You can jump on Southwest Airlines, fly to any of twenty locations in the United States and see first hand fear, distrust, and random ultra-violence.
Three things out of the Nation's Capital that I found interesting
