Friday Flashback :: Bananarama's "Cruel Summer"

Bananarama is still the most successful girl group ever to come out of the UK -- yes selling more records than the damn Spice Girls.

One of the main reasons for their success is today's Friday Flashback, "Cruel Summer."

This was one of the hot songs of 1984, appearing on Bananarama's eponymous release. The song is lyrically interesting, something that one wouldn't have expected from the British trio, based on their previous album. However, Bananarama took on some deep themes and more adventurous musicality with their '84 album.

"Cruel Summer" was a mainstay on the pop radio stations of the day, and a popular song heard at the middle-school and junior-high dances of the day.
