February 2008 Archives

Now, with over two decades to marinate, this song is universally accepted as the classic it was right from the start.

Under Threat of Death

It may in fact be true that some threats have been received. I don't know. But I'm surprised that if there were threats made against Tavis and some black politicians, we've not heard anything about it 'til now.
On this penultimate Friday of February, Black History Month, I decided to go back, be historic and get inspirational, all at the same time.

It's All About The Experience, Stupid

What on earth qualifies as experience?
Today's feature is from the silky-smooth voice of Jean Carn (or Carne, depending on what album you may own -- she added an "e" to her name for a short while in the 70's). Regardless of her name change, the quality of her music stayed remarkably consistent and familiar during the her great career.

Home Niggardry

Note to Black leaders: You wanna see your power erode quickly? The best way to do that would be to attempt to tip the balance in a ploy to save your own asses. You can trust that your flocks will no longer be inclined to follow you, and you'll end up exactly where you didn't want to be in the first place.
I submit that for a woman running on her independent apability to handle the pressure of the most important job in the entire Free World, she's not making herself look up to the task, weeping at a warm introduction by an old friend at a campaign event. It's not like it's Mother Teresa or somenone sainting her or whatever.
Of the myriad of things that have been said (and re-said) during the race to the White House, there are a few that are grating on my eardrums and I hope never to hear again! It's a shortish list, but I'm sure that for many of them, you might feel the same.
If there is another song that epitomizes the "Quiet Storm" (shout out to WHUR-FM, the home of the Quiet Storm) genre of R&B, I can't think of it.
