Friday Flashback :: Jean Carn's "Was That All There Was"

We've already done one FF featuring Ms. Carn(e), but I felt there was another in order.

Today's Flashback features a disco/house cult classic that still gets the clubheads up and twirling, two-stepping, etc.: "Was That All There Was."

While Ms. Carn(e) was having a decent start to her career with Philadelphia International Records, Carn's other labelmate, one Jerry Butler was having trouble getting his career going. Taking a hiatus from his own recording, he did some writing and production work for the lovely Ms. Carn(e) and provided her with what is now regarded as one of her career milestones in "Was That..."

Thanks to massive club and R&B radio play in the ensuing years, not to mention the proliferation of revivals it has been subjected to, it would be easy to believe that Butler and Johnny Ursy Jr.'s dance track was a monster, a smash hit of the first order.

Nope.

It was released as a single (and then as an add-on to When I Find You Love) and it went precisely nowhere on every sales and radio-airplay chart. But it did climb into the Top 25 in disco and club play, a suitable reward for what is a classic of major proportion. Now, with over two decades to marinate, this song is universally accepted as the classic it was right from the start.

Today's Friday Flashback: Jean Carn(e)'s "Was That All There Was."

Yes. A classic indeed. I've spoken my peice about this tune already. Of the millions of artists, there shouldn't be repeats already. Your slacking off... Raise the bar. Surprise us with some gems...
