For Whom The Bell Tolls
Today is a pivotal day in the race for the presidency, here in the good ol' U.S. of A.
Primaries in Texas and Ohio (along with Vermont and Rhode Island) could decide who the Democratic Party nominee will be. Victories in either Texas or Ohio for the Obama camp could be the death knell for the campaign of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (moving her to the presumptive Vice Presidential nominee in my eyes), while substantial wins by the junior Senator from New York could blunt Obama's rising tide and move Senator Clinton into the catbird seat.
Those states are predicting record turnouts, with over 50% of eligible voters expected to cast ballots in Ohio, and nearly 30% in Texas (in the Lone Star State totaling something like three million votes).
Oh, as if the situation isn't interesting enough, Vermont and Rhode Island two states Texas could eat for a midnight snack were it a person, could have supreme significance, if the two Dem heavyweights fight to a draw in the larger states.
Interestingly, no less a loser than Rush Limbaugh is encouraging folks in Texas to vote for Senator Clinton, to help the Democratic Party "tear itself apart...It is fascinating to watch, and it's all going to stop if Hillary loses," quoth the oxycontin King.
Bullshit.
And in even more interesting developments, Tories (that's Commonweath-speak for "conservatives" for the benefit of the less-international among us) in Canada have begun a silent smear campaign against Senator Obama, alleging that he's pro-NAFTA, in an attempt to insinuate that he's basically lying about his positions for the sake of political expediency. (Both he and Senator Clinton are on the record as of last week's debate, saying they opposed NAFTA; Senator Clinton in the past has said, though, that NAFTA was on-balance a winner for her New York constituents, although many upstaters would certainly disagree).
I didn't know they had neo-cons in Canada.
Regardless, this nomination process has taken on an almost unreal significance, bringing out the Devil (Limbaugh) and his demons (so-called neo-conservatives), among others to appreciate the spectacle and attempt to influence the outcome.
Pop some popcorn, and melt plenty of butter, or some substitute if you're going "low fat," and enjoy the coverage this evening.
It's going to be a looong night of returns watching.
