Friday Flashback :: Howard Johnson "So Fine"

In the early to mid-'80s, there were very few R&B producers were more sought out than Kashif. His roster of work includes mega hits for  Evelyn "Champagne" King, George Benson, and Melba Moore.

In short, for about seven years, everything he touched turned to either gold or platinum. He had absolutely no problem making an R&B recording sound fantastic. Today's Flashback artist benefited from Kashif's studio savvy. Howard Johnson got the hit-making touch with his 1982 release "So Fine," the first (and to my knowledge only) single off of the first of his three solo projects.

A good album overall, it featured this cherry, fairly soaked in The Kashif sound -- highly sophisticated, with lush keys and driving rhythm, rendering a stylish, yet funky track, but not as gritty as contemporaries Rick James, Jimmy Jam or Terry Lewis.

Johnson and Kashif created a very strong combination throughout this album. It's ultimately too bad that "So Fine" was the only real hit of the bunch, but at least we were graced with it.

Today's Friday Flashback, is the addictive party gem "So Fine."
