Friday Flashback :: Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls"

As I mentioned last week, I've been on a Minneapolis Sound kick, which refused to be sated by last weeks Sheila E. joint.

Today's Flashback finds me still jonesin' for synths, metal drums, strange sound-effects, and somewhat weak-vocaled tracks that just sound good, for some reason. Sheena Easton, another of His Purpleness' minions, was a spicy export from a place better known for kilts, whiskey, and golf. Under Prince's expert tutelage, she scored big with this bouncy, techno-pop piece from the good ol' days of 1984.

Born Sheena Shirley Orr in Bellshill, Scotland in 1959, she could be found imitating Barbara Streisand, and would soon find herself a student in the Royal Scottish School of Music and Drama, and later featured on some BBC programming. As a result of this fine artistic upbringing, Sheena became a much bigger hit in her home country, scoring two number one hits simultaneously in 1981.

Her big American break came with the provocative, Prince-penned "Sugar Walls," (which he wrote under the psuedo-nom Alexander Nevermind) which would make the Top Ten on the pop charts. Sheena's sultry/sexy vocals , coupled with synthy, unmistakably poppish, and infectiously composed accompaniment, assure "Sugar Walls" place as a classic dance hit for middle-schoolers like me, who at the time didn't know exactly what term "sugar walls" referred to -- though we all wanted to :-).

Regardless of, or perhaps because of the sexual overtones in the song, it's still a jam and should bring back fond memories for listeners over the age of 30 or so.

If you are on a MN kick then why beat around the bush and pick a classic Prince song like Head, Soft and Wet, Uptown, Controversy, Jak U Off, Delirious, Lady Cab Driver, International Lover, How Come You Don't Call Me No More, Erotic City, Another Lonely Chrismas, 17 Days, Let's Go Crazy, Darling Nikki, Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm a Star, Beautiful Ones, Tamnborine, Raspberry Beret, Condition of the Heart, I Wonder U, Sometimes It Snows in April, Anotherloverholenyohead, Mountains, Under the Cherry Moon, Ballad of Dorothy Parker, If I Were Your Girlfriend, Strange Relationship, When 2 R In Love, Scandalous Sex Suite (that is the long version in case you didn't know), Joy in Repetition... Well, I guess you get the point! Stop messing around. And if you do, there is still The Time, Vanity Six, Apollonia 6, The System, The Bangles, Jessie Johnson Revue, The Family, Madhouse... Again, I think you get my point. Yeah, I'm a fan...
