Friday Flashback :: Prince and The Revolution's "Computer Blue (Extended Mix)"
(NB: Thanks to 'Hustle devotee TBoogie of Brooklyn, NY for providing the mp3 file for today's FF. Thanks T!)
His Purple Highness, Prince, has had his hands in some of the biggest musical hits of all time. His creativity -- and the virtuousity of his hand-picked bands -- is legendary. And of course, such prolific production makes it tough to choose a few songs that qualify as "classics."
"Computer Blue" is today's selection of Prince-derived classic, as the "Minneapolis Sound" kick continues here at The 'Hustle. Appearing on the huge hit LP, Purple Rain, "Computer Blue" is kind of the sleeper in this collection of songs, released in 1984. Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and, not so surprisingly given it's Prince, that is exactly what happened.
Bandmembers Lisa, Wendy, Nelson, John L, and Prince collaborated to get the writing credit on this psuedo-psychedelic, futuristic, funk jam. This was an atypical, non-formulaic foray into pop for The Purple One. It was different because the song brought so many different styles together. "Computer Blue" was tinged with a solid funkiness, and a certain robotic quality. It combined swirly keys, chunky bass, rock guitar, and solid drum play, along with the requisite Prince high-register wails to perfection! "Computer Blue" is among his finest songs for the deft combination of these elements.
And while the original LP-version is a scant four minutes in length, the extended version weighs in at just under seven-and-a-half minutes of dancy, blissful goodness.
If you like Prince and The Revolution, today's Flashback is right up your alley...The Flashback for this Friday May 16, 2008 is "Computer Blue" from Prince.

One of my all time favorites....thanks!!!
"Is the water warm enough?... Yes, Lisa. Shall we begin?"
Brings back memories... of turning down the final track of the album, lest the parents should actually hear what I just figured out he was saying, then trying to play the album backwards to figure out that final chant...
