Friday Flashback :: Taja Sevelle's "Love Is Contagious"
I'm back on my Minneapolis Sound kick, and dug up a classic that was the proverbial "one hit" from a "one hit wonder."
Today's Flashback: Taja Sevelle's "Love Is Contagious."
The beautiful (if not terrifically talented) Ms. Sevelle gained a great deal of attention through today's flashback, her first single, in 1987. The album of the same name was produced by The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, on his Paisley Park label. Sevelle, with her light, high-pitched vocals was versatile, but had no real staying power, and aside from this one song, faded quickly into musical obscurity.
"Love Is..." features a typical synth-driven accompaniment, which complimented Taja's sometimes soaring vocal stylings. Still, after listening to the song, one has to ask why it's so enjoyable to hear, because there's nothing inherently great about the song on which to hang one's hat. Strange. But you know what? I no longer ask why I dig the song, I just do. And there are millions out there who feel the same.
The song was roundly panned by critics then, and was a minor hit chart-wise, but for some reason, it sticks with you.
I'll just assume that, for men above a certain age, we fantasized about Ms. Sevelle serenading us, and thus the song has a certain attraction for that reason.
